People with disabilities need solutions
Thursday, 17th August 2023
• YOUR August 10 Letters included three about major problems caused by Camden for disabled people. All were capable of simple and almost cost-free solutions.
A separate letter from Cllr Adam Harrison, the cabinet member for a sustainable Camden, was a lengthy diatribe against the Tory government for its proposals to close train ticket offices.
Perhaps the councillor could turn his attention to local problems where he can change things and improve the lives of those of us with real issues rather than on “national”, possible future, ones where he has no or little influence.
He might browse the numerous stories of disabled people on the Camden Disability Action website to see dozens of other examples where we are discriminated against. He could investigate the three cases reported and find a solution.
A group of disabled people and their carers invited Cllr Harrison to come to Gospel Oak to see for himself some of the problems we faced. He failed to respond.
In his favour he attended the last DOP, disability oversight panel, meeting where he met a wide range of disabled people and heard their numerous problems.
Perhaps he could tell us what actions he has taken. Hopefully he will attend the next DOP meeting, as might other cabinet members.
This will be more informative than the stunt by some councillors of donning a blindfold to see what it is like to be visually impaired.
