People-friendly streets are of real benefit

‘Low traffic, cleaner air, democracy rules!’
• PFS, people-friendly streets, have been proved to have a positive impact on air quality, by a study at Imperial College London, Evaluation of Low Traffic Neighbourhood (LTN) Impacts on NO2 and Traffic.
Islington’s LTNs, low traffic neighbourhoods, were also shown to reduce traffic levels: by 58.2 per cent on internal roads and by 13.4 per cent on boundary roads.
This study was done by comparing the LTN roads (both inside and on the boundary) with roads more than half a kilometre away.
Our councillors were elected in May with a thumping majority, on an unambiguous manifesto: “We will continue our programme to take traffic off local roads…”
The benefits are now proven: cleaner air and less traffic both inside and on the boundary roads. Yet, still, there are shouty people who don’t want these benefits, and don’t want other people to have them either.
But the silent majority have spoken, councillors have listened, and together we will have our people-friendly streets. Low traffic, cleaner air, democracy rules!
