Pedestrians’ safety is being ignored
Thursday, 18th May 2023
• MANY like me will have received a consultation circular promoting a so-called “Walking, Cycling and Road Safety Scheme” at and around Haverstock Hill and Rosslyn Hill, Hampstead.
Whoever designed this scheme should surely be disqualified from being given any such responsibility as it totally ignores the safety of pedestrians.
I am referring to the bus stop on the uphill side of Haverstock Hill opposite the Haverstock Arms pub. Also the next two stops. There anyone regardless of age who steps off the bus steps straight into a cycle lane.
Encouraging cycling, yes, but not at the expense of pedestrians. Pedestrians no longer seem to have any campaign looking after their interests.
The Pedestrians’ Association, formed before the war, became a few years ago, “Living Streets” whose interests are cycling and walking. So if the two conflict, in all likelihood it is the more vocal cyclists who win. It is surely up to the Camden Council to protect the interests of the weaker brethren.
