Pedestrian islands matter

John Sadler Island cartoon

Cartoon: John Sadler

• HAVING been an avid cyclist for decades, paradoxically, I view with anxiety local proposals for enhancing the safety of cycling.

There is finite amount of space for London travel. I have no reason to doubt claims that motor traffic is the culprit for creating health hazards and safety risk.

Accordingly to shrink motor vehicle road space would help confront the outstanding challenges of health and road safety. Appropriating the footway seems to be the wrong objective.

After recent challenging surgery I have been addressed as a “cripple”. Such biblical language is accurate and might entitle me to carry and ring a Haverstock safety bell.

Few other places can have a programme of diminishing pedestrian islands. Camden should pause before taking on the pedestrian lobby in its thousands.
