PER Mertesacker has tipped Mesut Ozil to hit the heights next season and told Arsenal fans there is “plenty more to come” from his compatriot.

The Germany playmaker became the Gunners’ record-signing when he joined from Real Madrid on transfer deadline day last summer in a deal believed to be worth around £42million.

Despite his recent dip of form, Ozil can reflect on a successful debut season in the Premier League having topped Arsenal’s assists charts and played more key passes than any of his team-mates.

Mertesacker, who himself took time to settle after joining Arsenal from Bundesliga side Werder Bremen, insists that things will only get better for the 25-year-old once he has fully adapted to the English game. “It’s very important to understand the differences between the leagues,” Mertesacker told Arsenal Player.

“Mesut came from La Liga and it’s quite difficult to play there. I think he has adapted well but there is plenty more to come from him. I think the second season will be much better for him because he’s a fantastic player.

“He has shown some great skills but he needs to be more consistent, which makes a difference at the end. Sometimes it’s good to get criticism and hear negative points.”

Ozil has just returned to action following a six-week spell on the sidelines with a hamstring injury. Mertesacker is convinced the break has done his team-mate good.

“It’s similar to myself when I got my injury in the second part of my first season. Afterwards I came back even stronger because then I realised what is at stake.

“I think for Mesut it was good to get a little rest and to be ready for the last few games for us, then the World Cup and then another season.

“I think with a pre-season ahead of him there’s definitely more to come from him.”
