Our tube stations need improvements
Thursday, 9th December 2021
• YOUR report (Jubilee line at ‘risk of closure’, December 2) reported London mayor Sadiq Khan’s suggestions that the Jubilee or Bakerloo would close if the government did not increase funding to Transport for London.
This comes hard on the heels of announcements that there will be no more work to install lifts at tube stations, even if part-funded by developer contributions. If the mayor pursues any of these suggestions the north west of the borough will be hit hard.
As well as depending on the Jubilee, the planned redevelopment of the O2 Centre car park over the next decade offers the opportunity for some developer contributions towards installation of lifts at West Hampstead or Finchley Road tube stations.
If this opportunity is missed another generation of people with disabilities will be barred from using this station, and another generation of West Hampstead residents will have to struggle with pushchairs and suitcases on a daily basis.
You also carried a letter from Cllr Anna Wright attacking the government for not giving TfL the funding it needs.
But, as well as blaming the Conservatives, what is Labour doing to fight the closure of the Jubilee with the mayor?
What are the Labour councillors for West Hampstead doing to impress on the mayor the impact on our community of stopping all tube station improvements, even where developer contributions are available?
It’s time for councillors to roll up their sleeves and fight for our community.
