Our representatives should get on the right side of history on Israel-Gaza

Thursday, 9th May 2024

• SO proud of the young people taking a stand for humanity in the encampment in UCL and also the student encampments springing up in universities across the country, showing how much they care as the appalling killing in Gaza heads into its eighth month.

So proud of the hundreds of thousands of people (all ages and all backgrounds) on every one of the big marches calling for a ceasefire and an end to our country’s support for the horrific mass-murders, maiming, destruction and displacement of the Palestinian people that shame us all.

So proud of all the organisations shouting that this must stop: as Oxfam projected on to the Houses of Parliament recently, “how many people killed is too many?”

So ashamed of this government and opposition aiding and abetting the killing; so ashamed of the mass media mislabelling these young people, and the marchers, and the protest voters in the local elections, with ugly names.

Older people remember that the student protests on the Vietnam war pointed the way to the freedom of Vietnam, and the student protests on the Gaza killings give us hope of freedom, human rights and equality for the Palestinian people.

They have some great chants too including: “One. We are the people. Two. We won’t be silenced. Three. Stop the bombing now now now now”.

Millions are with them and it is time for our representatives to get on the right side of history too.
