Our democratic system is broken
Thursday, 26th January 2023
• I AM very confused by John Stratton’s invective against Mick Farrant and Sue Shepherd, (People want decent councillors to represent them, January 19).
In the 2022 Camden local election two-thirds of the electorate did not vote. The Labour Party got 51 per cent of the votes but over 80 per cent of the councillors. Liberal Democrats have only five councillors as compared with 45 Labour.
How then would an 85-year-old Lib Dem councillor, even if elected in 2026 as Mr Stratton recommends, make the slightest impact on any of the issues raised in Mr Farrant’s letters.
Surely Mr Stratton should target the failure of senior councillors to respond to the issues raised. These are all issues which seriously impact on the most vulnerable of our residents.
Our democratic system is broken. Central to any democratic system is information and this is, surely, just what Mr Farrant is providing in his letters.
If others wish to challenge him or write in praise of the council’s performance, they are free to do so. We see very few of such letters or articles.
Hopefully the electorate votes on the basis of information or experience of the performance of the party in power in Camden.
Seemingly, Mr Stratton would deny voters access to such information. Perhaps he should stand as a councillor.
