‘Other libraries elsewhere have managed to open in safe ways. Why not Camden?’

• CAMDEN’S libraries are one of the jewels in our crown and, as such, valued highly by our community.

It used to be said that libraries were the gentle face of the council, non-critical, trustworthy, helpful, relaxing, full of knowledge and entertainment, a source of advice and education, and a warm, safe, place to go.

But what is their future? Only open now for limited hours to book a computer session, they have lost their soul and their original purpose, borrowing books.

People have changed their habits. Those who can afford to buy new books, others browse in charity shops, exchange with friends, and read e-books online.

Will they ever return to our libraries again? Possibly, but not in sufficient numbers to make them viable and the council’s bean counters will then seize the opportunity to close them for good.

Other libraries elsewhere have managed to open in safe ways. Why not Camden? We should be ashamed.
