One has the right to defend oneself from harm

• IT is a worthwhile cause to openly discuss the present-day topic of pregnancy that is viewed so differently by many in our society.
We are given life and its potentials and society continues to seek ways to improve and lengthen the quality of life for everyone.
Thank goodness for the NHS. Our caring society has even protected those considered despicable individuals from capital punishment in the hope they might repent, find love and forgiveness, and prevent a life mistake being made.
May I suggest that your published article (Church in ‘anti-abortion event’ row, August 18) be directed to a more human outlook “Church in pro-life event”?
We might ask to what extent is it permitted to take another’s life. One certainly has the right to defend oneself from potential harm and death. Now, how far can this defence go?
Should there be support for a person under threat or where another life is involved? Getting help to save your life or another, I believe, is a common goal for everyone under threat – even more so for the less able and needy in our society.
