ARSENAL’S Team GB contingent added firepower to the opening event of the London 2012 Olympic Games yesterday (Wednesday) when they beat New Zealand 1-0.
The historic opener saw Hope Powell’s side overpower the Football Ferns in a thrilling advert for the women’s game.
No fewer than six Arsenal players featured in the victory, with defender Steph Houghton scoring the crucial breakthrough goal just after the hour.
“It hasn‘t sunk in yet,” she said of the first ever Team GB women’s Olympic goal afterwards.
Arsenal’s Alex Scott and Kim Little both had chances to open the score and former Gunner Anita Asante came close with three fine headers.
The first of those hit the post, leaving keeper Jenny Bindon kissing the upright in thanks.
Bindon could do little about Houghton’s free kick, though, as her defensive wall allowed the 24-year-old’s volley enough space to fly into the bottom corner.
Team GB keeper Karen Bardsley spared her side’s blushes with a fingertip save from Amber Hearn and a point-blank save from Sarah Gregorius.
Team GB go again on Saturday when they face Cameroon at the Millennium Stadium.
