MOVE over Olympics, the Camden International Cadet Sabre Tournament is coming to town.
The prestigious fencing tournament returns for its eighth year and is expected to attract more than 200 of the best young blades from around the world.
A nominated event on the European Fencing Federation Circuit, the highly regarded competition has now been given a venue to match its status after securing a move to the Copper Box Multi Sports Arena in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.
Hundreds of school children from across Camden will flock to the Copper Box, one of the eye-catching venues used during the London 2012 Olympics, to watch the boys’ and girls’ individual championships on Saturday January 25.
Then on Sunday January 26 the team championships will be held at the Leon Paul Centre in Hendon.
The tournament has proved a massive success for Camden Fencing Club, who organise the event.
Not only has the club gained huge respect and recognition within the fencing circuit, but there’s been a medal or two along the way.
Last year Jonathan Webb collected a bronze medal for Great Britain in the boy’s individual event, while in 2011 Aliya Itzkowitz scooped a silver in the girls’ individual competition.
Peter Bundey, director of Greenwich Leisure Limited, who sponsor the event alongside Leon Paul, said; “We are delighted that the Copper Box Arena is able to host this event to bring fencing the the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and to showcase the sport in this fantastic legacy venue.”
