CLERKENWELL Old Boys flew the flag for the Camden Sunday League in style at the weekend when they cruised into the last 16 of the London Trophy courtesy of a commanding victory over Middlesbrough FC Supporters’ Club.

The Islington-based side started brightly and took the lead after just five minutes when Steve Killingback latched onto a deft flick from Dan Attard to finish crisply.

Boro battled back to equalise, but Clerkenwell restored their advantage just on the break when Attard scored from the spot after Matty Salvoni was brought down in the box.

The second half was one-way traffic with Clerkenwell missing a host of chances before Matty headed home a well-flighted cross from his brother, Jamie.

The best was most definitely left till the last as, on 75 minutes, Aiden Chainey scored a peach, beating three defenders before unleashing a stunning curling effort from the edge of the area to wrap up a 4-1 victory.

Club secretary Paul Ferguson said he couldn’t have asked for more from his boys. “I’m very proud of the lads, we totally deserved the win,” he said. “In only our second season together we are taking the fight to all London clubs, and we will be representing Camden and Islington with pride in the last 16 of the London Sunday Trophy.

“I want to say a special thanks to Bradley Roberts of the Thornhill Arms for being our proud sponsor and allowing us to use his pub as a base.”
