Buckingham Palace
• LEAPING loyally to the defence of the Royal Family, John Stratton (Elizabeth II so admired, September 29) drags out the well-worn argument that they’re “worth millions to the economy” because of the “influx of tourists” lured here by our royally-associated “unique institutions and ceremonies” – including, no doubt, the 22 royal residences?
One of the most-visited tourist attractions in the entire world – quite possibly the most-visited – is the Palace of Versailles. And as Mr Stratton may have heard, the French haven’t enjoyed the benefits monarchy for more than 150 years….
