Nubya Garcia’s musical journey will inspire others
Thursday, 2nd September 2021
• NOT only has she been shortlisted for the Mercury Prize 2021 but it is also thrilling to see Camden Town-born and raised musician Nubya Garcia, a former pupil at Camden School for Girls, make her debut as a bandleader at the BBC Proms this year.
Starting her music journey at age five with the Camden Music Saturday Centre on the violin, she moved to viola and saxophone, the latter now her primary instrument.
It was wonderful to hear her credit the Camden Youth Jazz Band on stage as she recollected playing at the Royal Albert Hall during the borough’s biannual school music extravaganza as a teenager.
It is a credit to the foundation input of the Camden Music Service that Nubya has reached such career heights with Nubya herself now a patron of the Camden Music Trust.
Her musical journey can only serve to inspire other young musicians. Nubya Garcia Prom 21, is currently available on BBC iPlayer.
