Now’s not the time to discourage traditional landlords

‘The landlords of the future will be more in the form of big corporates’
• ROBERT Taylor of the Camden Federation of Private Tenants is seeking an alteration to the law that eviction can only take place only after a court process even if there are substantial arrears, (The landlords & the law, February 24).
The growth of the traditional private rented sector is already subdued following the blows dealt it mainly by George Osborne but also subsequent chancellors.
The landlords of the future will, as a result, be more in the form of big corporates and this is indeed deliberate government policy.
However there is also a homes shortage and so until the goliath landlords (currently small in terms of numbers of dwellings) provide enough stock it may not be wise to discourage traditional landlords by making them more risk averse.
