Cobden: set for final clash

Published: 19 March, 2015

THE crowds are expected to flock back to Hackney Marshes this weekend to see Cobden face FC Lotus in the Camden Sunday League Challenge Cup final, which we proudly sponsor.

Cobden go into the game clear favourites – especially after they gained revenge over Coalition Crusaders on Sunday.

The Crusaders beat Cobden in a penalty shoot-out in the final  last season. But in this eagerly-awaited rematch it was Cobden’s players who were cheering at the final whistle, winning the semi-final 2-0 to move tantalisingly close to the trophy that eluded them last season.

Cobden took the lead when Matthew Loughney’s free-kick was spilled by the Crusaders’ keeper, allowing Luke Morgan to strike from close range.

Winston Fowler wrapped up a commanding win late on when he controlled a 50-yard crossfield pass and smashed the ball home with aplomb.

Division two champions FC Lotus, who smashed seven past AFC Shooters in their semi-final, warned they’re not turning out on Sunday just to make up the numbers. “On paper we might look like underdogs, but I can assure you we won’t be,” said club secretary Joshua Amartey ahead of the big kick off.
