Now Brexit underpins all political debate in the UK
Thursday, 25th October 2018

• ON November 12 Camden Council will debate whether to call for a people’s vote on Brexit with a Remain option.
The last council meeting ran out of time to discuss the motions, but both Labour and the LibDems had put forward supportive motions; hurrah! But Labour’s motion called for a general election and for a public vote only if that was not possible.
Whatever the arguments for and against a change of government it would not much affect Brexit. Both the main parties are split on the question.
A new government would face the same problem of trying to keep the different factions of the party together while negotiating with the EU which only has a limited range of options it can offer. The actual effects of Brexit would still be very different from those its supporters promise.
And 700,000 people, many from Camden, marched on Saturday for a people’s vote, a referendum on the terms of Brexit with the option to Remain. The decision whether to go ahead with Brexit underpins all political debate.
The Brexit decision needs to be taken before we choose the next government. That is also the position of most London local authorities who have considered the people’s vote. Rejected the motion: Bromley. People’s vote only if there is no general election and with no commitment to Remain being an option: Haringey.
People’s vote with no general election pre-condition and with a Remain option: Hammersmith & Fulham, Ealing, London Assembly, Richmond upon Thames, Merton, Mayor of London, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham, Lambeth, Waltham Forest.
Which of these lists do you wish Camden Council to be on? I urge readers to contact their councillors to let them know.
