ARSENE Wenger will keep Arsenal fans guessing right until the last moments of the transfer window, telling supporters worried about the club’s goal-shy start to the season: “Don’t forget we’ve still got Danny Welbeck to come back.”

The Ashburton Grove faithful are calling for a new forward to bolster the attacking options, having seen the team fail to score in both of their home matches so far.

With Tuesday’s 6pm deadline looming, the Gunners have been linked with Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani and Aleksandr Kokorin from Dynamo Moscow.

Wenger, however, insists that he has a strike force capable of getting goals and driving his team towards the title.

“We have Alexis Sanchez back, Theo Walcott is in good shape, along with Welbeck and Olivier Giroud,” said the Arsenal boss following Monday night’s goalless draw against Liverpool.

“We have plenty of players. There is a lot of competition here. We have good potential and I’m confident that will come out.

“I believe we know we can score goals,” he said.

And the Frenchman added: “This squad is ready to fight for the title and has a chance to do it given that we are continuing to develop as a team.

“It is important that we don’t have too many major injuries like we did last season.”

Despite being linked with a series of possible signings all summer, Arsenal have only added goalkeeper Petr Cech to their squad.

Wenger said that was because selling clubs held all the power, adding that he could not force teams to release their players. “There is always time to take a gamble and we are not against taking a gamble,” he said. “But what you want is to take a gamble in a market where the opportunity is there.

“When the player has a contract it’s the club who owns the contract who decides. I have said that many times.

“We want to master the situation of the players who are under contract with us.”
