NHS treatment should be free and equal

Thursday, 21st June 2018

• AS a cancer survivor myself, who received, and is still receiving, all treatment on the NHS, I was sorry to learn that Mo Haque had to fund his treatment via donations, (Complete strangers help man raise £190,000 for cancer treatment only ‘millionaires could afford’, June 14).

Obviously, though, I am pleased to learn that he is now cancer free. As he says, however, many others in the same situation are less fortunate.

I am unable to understand the rationale behind decisions to treat some forms of cancer on the NHS, as mine was, but not others. This seems a form of discrimination. Surely cancer is equally serious whatever form it takes.

I understand the financial pressures the NHS is under (many of these caused by years of under-funding), but surely everyone suffering from the same condition should have an equal entitlement to free treatment.
