THE new recruits representing the Camden District football team fired a six-goal salute to their predecessors on Saturday as they won their opening game in the Lester Finch Trophy.

Last summer we reported how the borough’s Year 6 boys become the toast of the capital by winning the prestigious competition for the first time in its 49-year history.

That team has now moved on and gone to secondary school, but the newcomers look more than up to the challenge of retaining the trophy after beating Haringey 6-0 at Regent’s Park.

Striker Trae William-Lauder scored two, while Camden showed tremendous strength in the middle of the park with midfielders Tommaso Isoni, Jake Gee and Josiah Thompson also all getting on the score-sheet. Bobby Webb, who also plays in midfield, chipped in with the goal of the game as he hit the back of the net with a 25-yard screamer.

Manager Abul Koyar, who runs the team with Shaun Taylor, said: “Going from having never won the cup before to retaining it would be a massive achievement. For now we’re happy just taking it one game at a time.”
