CHAMPIONS Sir Robert Peel will face a tough task holding on to their crown in the Chalk Farm Pool League after their closest challengers returned to action on Monday night boasting new recruits, writes Steve Barnett.
Peel have won the division one title for four years in a row. But their hopes of making it five are seriously under threat after the King’s Cross Hurricanes strengthened their squad in the summer, adding the likes of Mark Piercey (pictured) and Dean Daly to their ranks.
Fittingly, the rivals met on the opening night of the season on Monday and it was Hurricanes who dealt out the first blow as they won the nine-frame contest 5-4 with Piercey making an immediate impact as he won his doubles contest alongside team-mate Quill Cheyne.
Newly-promoted teams King’s Cross Barbarians, who were the division two champions last season, and Boston Old Skool looked to have quickly adapted to the top flight as they won their respective matches against the Peckwater Playboys and Boston Rimmers.
