Camden Town WFC enjoyed a 5-1 win in interim manager Darren Smith’s first match in charge
INTERIM manager Darren Smith has been credited with adding “a real injection of energy” into Camden Town WFC after steering his new side to a 5-1 victory in his opening match in charge on Sunday.
After the game, club chairman Richard Mahoney, who lives in Highbury, was quick to praise Smith, who only took over the reins 10 days ago after predecessor Harry Sherman stepped down citing personal reasons.
“The impact Darren has had in such a short space of time is clear to see,” said Mahoney. “There’s been a real injection of energy, clarity and belief, and the players’ response to that has been outstanding.
“I’m incredibly proud of how they’ve dealt with change and how they performed today. If we continue like this, I’m confident we can reach our targets.”
Town’s new era got off to a shaky start when Kira Curtis Howard headed Herne Bay into an early lead at Wingate & Finchley Stadium. But far from wobbling, the home side responded in scintillating style to earn three big points in Division One North of the London & South East Regional League.
Maxine Borden, Rebecca Smith, Kelly Faye, captain Sophie Hoyle and Maria Paz Vera all found the back of the net as Town’s ruthless reply to going a goal down resulted in five different scorers.
“I’m really pleased with the result and, more importantly, the attitude of the players,” said Smith after the game.
“They took on the information well, showed real commitment to the game plan, and competed for each other throughout. There’s still plenty to work on, but it’s a very positive first step.”
