‘Navigators’ could try the uniform
Thursday, 1st July 2021
• AS is the current trend in social work nomenclature I believe workers at the London Irish Centre are no longer to be known as advice and outreach workers but henceforth are to be called “navigators”.
As this was the original job title given to the many thousands of Irish migrants who came to London to work on the roads and canals of the city (shortened to “navvy”) this seems appropriate.
In honour of these mighty men who built London I suggest that the London Irish Centre “navigators” adopt the traditional uniform of the navvy, that is, wellington boots and donkey jackets to make visitors to the London Irish Centre feel more welcome in the new shiny glass and steel structure costing £18million, as announced in the CNJ in September.
