My husband Frank would never have turned his back on Labour

• YOUR article about the local elections (April 9) has been drawn to my attention.

I note that it includes a quote from someone purporting to speak for my late husband Frank Dobson. It is claimed that, before he died, Frank said that if he were starting out again in politics he would join a different party. I am astonished and upset, as are family and friends who actually knew him well.

We were both Labour Party members when we got together in 1966 and during 53 years of marriage we shared the ups and downs of political life.

Regardless of agreement or disagree-ment with individual policies, whether in government, opposition or indeed retirement he never once contemplated turning his back on the Labour Party.

He believed that it was the best opportunity to help change people’s lives for the better.

His six decades as a party member including as a Camden councillor and 36 years as MP for Holborn and St Pancras showed where he believed his political home to be.

Frank always said what he thought. If his views were as reported we would all certainly have heard them, probably more than once!

He got on well with people from across parties in Camden but thought very badly of underhand tactics. I also note Richard Olszewski is mentioned in the article.

He made a moving speech at the memorial event for Frank in the Surma Centre and clearly shares Frank’s values and commitment. I would unhesitatingly encourage people to vote for him and his Labour colleagues on May 7.

JANET DOBSON
