Murphy’s Yard scheme is entirely alien

Thursday, 27th January 2022

• THE chair of Kentish Town Neighbourhood Forum should not support the application for Murphy’s Yard as it is against the interests of people in Kentish Town.

Roger Winfield says it “accords with the principle” of the Kentish Town Neighbourhood Plan; but it does not.

The plan says that “proposals must be well integrated into their surroundings and reinforce and enhance local character”.

This scheme is entirely alien. Like King’s Cross it is a jumble of very big blocks placed too close to each other, crossed with Camden Market.

What a nightmare. You will most likely choose to go round it rather than through it. It will be too uncomfortable and artificial.

You might take your cousins there when they come to see London, for the spectacle of seeing so much accommodation crammed into one small space.

The planners must have indicated to Folgate Estates that they were in with a chance with this scheme, or they wouldn’t have submitted it.

It will now be a matter of bartering how much of the floor space needs to be cut out and whipping members of the planning committee to accept it.

What a pity there is not another way, with the council working in our interests rather than encouraging gross overdevelopment.
