Mr Jagger, the top surgeon with an eye for tennis

Jonathan Jagger
• I WAS interested to read the tribute to the retiring RFH eye consultant, Jonathan Jagger, (Mr Jagger eyes up a future beyond the Royal Free, June 7).
He was the specialist I usually saw during my visits over the years to the ophthalmology department. I’d no idea until now that the efficient gent who carried out a cataract op on me did the same for the Queen.
Being a squeamish sort of bloke, I tend to flinch whenever anyone seeks to examine my eyes. One time I apologised to Mr Jagger for this reflex recoil and explained: “On the whole, I’d rather be somewhere else.”
I was much amused when, quick as a flash, he replied: “So would I. I’d rather be playing tennis.” Long may he flourish on the playing fields of Harley Street.
