POLICE investigating anti-Semitic abuse in north London have made four arrests after video showed threats being shouted from cars driving along the Finchley Road yesterday (Sunday).
Officers described the scene as “utterly shocking” and vowed it would not be tolerated, as politicians condemned the convoy.
Today (Monday) Hampstead and Kilburn MP Tulip Siddiq raised the incident in the House of Commons, asking for “additional resources” to be provided to protect Jewish schools, synagogues and community centres.
“Racists drove through past the amazing community centre, JW3, on the Finchley Road in my constituency shouting anti-Semitic hate speech,” she said. “I’m very proud to represent an area with a sizeable Jewish community and several synagogues – but my Jewish constituents are now feeling unsafe in their own homes.”
The cars were draped in Palestinian flags and came as the conflict in the Middle East intensified and protests were held in cities all over the United Kingdom on Sunday.
The UN said over the last week there had been 950 Israeli airstrikes on Gaza, killing 181 Palestinians, including 52 children. More than 2,900 rockets had been fired at Israel, killing 10 people, including two children. World leaders have urged both sides to step back from all-out war, but there was no signs of a ceasefire being brokered today.
Politicians in the UK warned that however people felt about the conflict, there was no excuse for the anti-Semitic and threatening abuse hurled from the drive-through yesterday and called for all incidents to be reported.
Camden Council leader Labour councillor Georgia Gould said: “Camden is a borough where we won’t tolerate racism. The vile antisemitic and misogynist hate speech many experienced earlier today was utterly unacceptable. Grateful to police for fast action. If you experience hate please report it so action can be taken.”
The leader of the opposition in Camden, Conservative councillor Oliver Cooper, said: “This is horrendous. Continual singling out of Israel has created a climate where people drive convoys through the largest Jewish community in Britain, threatening to kill and rape Jews. Arrest everyone involved and shame on the anti-Israel obsessives that empower this..”
Superintendent Jo Edwards said extra patrols had been organised, adding: “This behaviour was utterly shocking and will not be tolerated.
“Enquiries were carried out and officers traced a car to the A40 in Hillingdon. The police helicopter was deployed and officers stopped the car at approximately 18:30hrs.
“Four men were arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences. They were taken into custody at a west London police station where they remain.”
