IF Nigel Farage’s record of standing seven times as an election candidate without winning a seat – and famously being trounced by a dolphin – sounds like hard work, then meet the man who will be standing for the 15th time, and has never won back his £500 deposit.
This week, Nick “The Fabulous Flying Brick” Delves handed in his nomination forms at the Town Hall, to be officially entered into the ballot as the Monster Raving Loony Party’s candidate in Holborn and St Pancras. It is the first time the party, founded by the late Screamin’ Lord Sutch, has stood in the constituency.
Meeting at its local campaign headquarters – the Tapping The Admiral pub in Castle Road, Kentish Town – Mr Delves unveiled a flagship policy of free drinks and cigarettes for those in need on Tuesday.
He told the New Journal of his party’s radical plans to cut the cost of living.
He said: “We have a manic-festo that includes scrapping January and February. It would help with fuel bills and the cost of living.”
Mr Delves has previously stood against ex-Labour leaders Ed Miliband and Jeremy Corbyn.
He said: “There was a by-election in my home town of Derby in 1994. I didn’t fancy voting for any of the main parties and I looked for the Loonies, but they didn’t have a candidate running. I called their headquarters and asked why. They said they didn’t have anyone step forward, but they would next time. I asked who, and they said: you.”
His campaign manager and chief spin doctor Josh “Mad Hatter Laud” Mallinson said: “I told my dad I wanted to be a politician and he asked which party. He told me all about the main ones and then also the Loonies. I was hooked from then on.”
