Memories of Kate, Kathryn Brownlee

• I WAS interested to read the story about the Working Men’s College library refurbishment, (New look for library thanks to bequest, February 1).

In the 1970s I was a fellow science technician at the WMC. I was the physics technician with Kate (Kathryn Brownlee) whose generous bequest part-funded the restoration. She looked after the biology laboratory above the physics lab. I knew her for several years before she left to read languages at a university. She was successful and gained a degree.

At some stage in her career she left WMC and taught languages. After she left the college I lost touch with her.

We had some slight disagreements occasionally, on her introduction to me of her support of environmentally friendly vegetarian foods and production (nothing too serious though). In fact she was instrumental in me looking towards vegetarians and vegetarianism.
