THERE was a new name etched on the CNJ Camden Sunday League Challenge Cup at the weekend after MDM edged out the Coalition Crusaders in a five-goal thriller at Hackney Marshes.

Having suffered extra-time heartache when they took on Cobden Athletic in the final of the Senior Cup, MDM were determined to avoid further disappointment.

They took the lead in spectacular style midway through the first half when Kwesi Marfo cut in from the wing and unleashed a left-footed thunderbolt into the top corner.

Kwesi was once again the tormentor for MDM’s second goal as he was brought down in the box.

The ref’s whistle for a foul allowed captain Koby Billzy to double the advantage from the penalty spot.

Just before the break the Crusaders pulled a goal back from the spot to set up a nervy second half.

Marfo looked to have put the result beyond doubt 10 minutes from time when he latched on to Billzy’s through-ball, took a clever touch, and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper. The Crusaders hit back again to set up a nail-biting final few minutes.

But MDM managed to hold on to seal a thrilling 3-2 victory and secure their first trophy in the club’s seven-year history.
