Canal at Camden Lock with green duckweed

A MAN enjoying a night out in Camden Lock had to be rescued from the canal after mistaking a thick layer of duckweed for lawn and walking into the water.

The 29-year-old escaped uninjured, having been pulled from the Regent’s Canal, near the Ice Wharf, by friends on Friday. Each year waterways are covered in the fast-growing algae, which can suffocate aquatic wildlife if left unchecked. The Canal and River Trust said that “dogs and other animals have been known to mistake it for grass and end up in the water”.
