Police at the scene in Bayham Street today

A MAN was found dead on a building site in Camden Town this morning (Tuesday).

Police were called to the former Heckscher piano shop in Bayham Street at around 8am, to reports that a man had collapsed. The man, who is in his 40, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The former warehouse and showroom is in the process of being converted into offices.

Investigations into the circumstances of his death continue, police said.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “At this early stage, the death is being treated as unexplained although enquiries into the circumstances continue.

“Next of kin have been informed and a post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.”

Heckscher & Company was set up in the 1880s by Siegmund Heckscher and has been run by the family ever since. The Bayham street shop closed in 2014, after more than 100 years of trading on the site and the family sold the site.

A HSE spokeswoman said: “HSE was alerted to the incident by the police and visited site yesterday morning but as it stands the police have primacy in this investigation.”
