Make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists

Thursday, 28th April 2022

• IT’S over a decade since student Deep Lee died in a horrific incident outside King’s Cross station while she was cycling to university.

Transport for London has strategic ownership of the King’s Cross gyratory system, which straddles the boroughs of Camden and Islington.

Although TfL has, in the time since, made one change to the Gray’s Inn Road / York Way junction where Deep Lee was killed, there remains much to do in order to make the area safer for cyclists and also for pedestrians.

After speaking to many residents, there is an increased urgency to make things safer. A recent collision on Pentonville Road in which a cyclist was badly hurt should be a wake-up call.

On streets within Camden, two of the main residential roads are Acton and Swinton streets. The gyratory makes both one-way and at times the speed vehicles use is well above 30mph. This needs to change for the safety of families and pedestrians.

It is good news that TfL recently committed to introducing a 20mph limit on the gyratory. But these roads also need zebra crossings to make it easier and safer to walk, as well as protection for cyclists at least at junctions.

We have met residents and will be renewing our calls for action on the King’s Cross gyratory.
