Make Queen’s Crescent safer for shoppers
Friday, 17th April 2020

• A VITAL resource in the present Covid-19 crisis are the local “convenience” stores.
This is especially the case in Queen’s Crescent as was clearly identified by well over 500 residents in Camden Council’s consultation report way back in 2016.
These shops not only stock foods to meet the needs of a diverse community, they are cheaper than large supermarkets, and can be accessed without a time consuming trip by public transport to supermarkets.
However, it is important that the crescent is a safer place to shop. Some of the shops do try to ensure social distancing but more needs to be done.
The management of traffic is an important issue. Over the last many months vehicles have been speeding through the crescent on market days at great risk to shoppers.
Many of us have repeatedly implored the market manager and councillors to ensure that the gates are kept closed. As with the above 2016 report these pleas have been totally ignored.
We understand that more people are now using the crescent’s shops and thus traffic and other safety management is even more essential.
The closure of the post office has led to the closure of the one remaining free cash machine; all others charge.
A further reason for buying in the crescent is to help shopkeepers to remain in business.
The lack of safety management and the dire condition of the street market prior to the crisis do not bode well for the future.
The council must deal with these issues and not continue with ignoring the needs and wishes of local people.
