DEFENDING champions Cobden Athletic continued their perfect start to the season on Sunday when they narrowly beat title-rivals Athletico Annies in Division One of the Camden Sunday League.
Cobden, who are chasing their third successive title, took the lead when Luke Morgan latched on to a long throw-in and slid the ball past the onrushing keeper.
Annies piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser but found themselves further behind when Steven Bruce scored, against the run, to give Cobden a 2-0 lead.
Annies were rewarded for their enterprising play on the stroke of half time when they scored to reduce the deficit.
But hopes of a comeback were quickly quashed when man-of-the-match Morgan netted his second of the game with a well-placed header.
Annies set up a nervous final five minutes when they scored again, but Cobden held out to seal what could prove a massive 3-2 victory.
Manager Dave Willis, dubbed the Magic Man, was delighted after seeing his side make it five wins on the spin in the league. “We sent out a warning shot to our rivals, letting them know that our strikers are on fire and that we have the meanest defence in the league,” he said.
The Metropolitan Rockets are another side with their eyes on the title prize after they beat St Peter’s on Sunday in Division Three. Darren Blackstock led the charge with two goals, while Daniel Ready also found the back of the net in a 3-1 win. The result leaves the Rockets one point behind leaders Chalk Scratchings with a game in hand.
