Unfit for Heroes-Sadler

• YOUR correspondent FW Anderson’s reminder that surviving heroes of D-Day went on to elect a radical Labour government was timely, (Eighty years on, June 6).

The process of their dreams being trashed – the NHS, more social housing, an extended welfare state – began as early as the mid-1950s and then gathered pace with the arrival of Margaret Thatcher and her Tory successors.

From them, this betrayal of the people who fought for freedom was not entirely unexpected. The immense sadness is that successive Labour governments have assisted the Tories in this by perpetuating the myth that there was not enough wealth in the UK to give all of its citizens a decent and dignified life.

That is a special sort of treachery by some Labour politicians against the very class that created and bankrolled the party they have now hijacked and in whose name they seek power.
