Look at Camden's record in inequalities too

Labour councillor Awale Olad said ‘sharp-elbowed’ residents in the north of the borough get a better response to crime concerns

• THE councillor questioning the allocation of police resources to the “wealthier” parts of the borough, (‘Wealthy, sharp-elbowed’ residents in Hampstead get better response to crime concerns, councillor claims, July 25) might like to look at Camden’s own record.

A few examples: Highgate ward is to get £3.5million for a new community centre. Gospel Oak had a youth centre closed by the council for seven months because the voluntary organisation running it could not afford the £10k rent demanded.

Highgate has a flourishing farmers’ market in William Ellis school. The council took back the management of Queen’s Crescent street market from a voluntary organisation, which was making a success of it, in 2015. There were just three stalls on the market last Saturday, compared with 60 under the previous management four years ago.

In 2012 there were some 90 council rent homes in Bacton Low Rise; there are now just 46. and a large non-building site. Lismore Circus is awash with graffiti, much gang tag-related. As featured in the New Journal, there is much fly-tipping.

These are, I think, matters for the councillor’s own scrutiny committee. Don’t even mention open drug dealing in the area! By all means criticise the police, but please look into the inequalities created by the council itself.
