Sparring technique: hitting the pads with Saints coach CJ Hussein

A NEW name will hit the world of professional boxing next weekend when welterweight Kian “The Technician” Thomas steps between the ropes at the Camden Centre to fulfil his boyhood dream.

The 23-year-old enjoyed an outstanding amateur career with St Pancras ABC which saw him win 26 of his 30 fights, winning a national title along the way.

But throughout his 10-year stay with the Saints, the former William Ellis schoolboy only had one thing in mind – making a name for himself within the paid ranks.

That “journey” continues on Saturday April 18 when he takes on Kristian Laight over four three-minute rounds in his first pro fight in Euston.

“Since the very beginning, my ambition was always to turn professional, that has always been my journey,” Kian said.

“I decided this time last year that I was going to turn over, and I have been hitting the gym hard since October to get ready for my big debut.”

Kian, who works as an architectural technician, said that he’s expecting the biggest difference between the amateur and the professional ranks to take place outside of the ring.

“To be honest at this very moment, I’m thinking of it as just another fight,” he added.

“I’m excited, of course, but all of the adrenaline and all of the preparations so far are the same.

“But because it’s my first professional fight, there will be people coming to cheer me on who haven’t seen me fight before – like my granddad.

“But he’s got diabetes and one leg so, on the night, he can’t help me,” Kian joked.

“I’ll be in the ring on my own, and I’m ready.

“I really want to thank PLP Architecture, GM Real Estate, Power Boxing and Bikram Yoga who are sponsoring me.

“Their combined efforts have allowed me to take time off work so that I can focus fully on fight night.”
