Recycling: ‘plastic, more of a problem’

• ANAEROBIC pyrolytic conversion may be the term missing from your report, (Eco blow: only 26 per cent of rubbish is recycled, March 18) and which points to the solution.

In recycling bins the metals, cardboard and paper are easy to separate and recycle. This leaves the plastic, more of a problem.

Some of it is readily recyclable but that which they say isn’t can be subject to anaerobic pyrolytic conversion, a frightening name for baking in the absence of air followed by redistilling, a process which is well understood. Greenology are doing this on a commercial scale (www.greenologyuk.com).

They are in the Midlands and I have written to them to see if the plant could be packed into a large vehicle to be driven around the country, servicing all local authorities.

On the other hand, Camden could sub-license the process, get this truck built, and use the profits to benefit us all.
