Let’s get it straight on the removal of the Lismore Circus bins

The amount of litter recovered by volunteers from Lismore Circus
• THERE is some clarification required in the report of rubbish in Lismore Circus with regard to the quoted statement made by Cllr Meric Apak who claimed, “the five litter bins which were removed due to fly-tipping problems were positioned on a footpath that runs parallel to the railway wall”, (Rubbish piles up after bins removed, August 27).
It should be made clear that there was in fact no bin “fly-tipping” problem in this area; and further that the five bins which were removed were actually removed from the common thoroughfare area used by the public to connect pedestrian access from Malden Road to Mansfield Road.
There were only ever two bins positioned on the railway path, which still remain in their location and remain soiled, full of rubbish and unattended since the other five bins were removed from the main circle.
This information can be corroborated by locals and by the others referenced in the article.
Either a) the CNJ has misquoted Cllr Apak; or b) Cllr Apak has been misinformed by persons reporting to him; or c) Cllr Apak has chosen to misrepresent the situation.
The local authority’s caretaking team says it “litter-picks daily”. It does not. Furthermore, if the former bins were still situated in the area, surely the staff would have little need to litter-pick daily at all.
The photograph above is of the amount of litter recovered by volunteers on Sunday past from Lismore Circus – four medium-sized sacks – that is one-week worth of rubbish recovered from the small area.
The five bins in question served excellent purpose and need to be reinstalled and dutifully maintained, as do the other remaining two on the path for a tidy and healthy neighbourhood to exist.
If Camden has taken on responsibility for rubbish removal from the Veolia contractor, Camden must provide an equal or better service to that which Lismore Circus previously had.
