FORGET the Premier League – we’ve got three good reasons why football fans should kick-start their season this Saturday!
Camden duo Anthony Wordsworth and Danny Hylton and Islington’s Duane O’Achie will be flying the flag for their respective boroughs when they return to action at the weekend.
Perhaps the most eager to get back on the pitch will be Anthony, 25, who will be hoping to help Championship side Ipswich start their season with a victory over Fulham.
The midfielder, who grew up in Cumberland Market in Regent’s Park, has struggled with injuries since joining the Tractor Boys. He spent three months on the sidelines last season after fracturing three vertebrae after colliding with Blackpool keeper Matt Gilks.
“On a personal note I hope I can stay fit after missing most of last season through injury,” said the former Haverstock schoolboy, who can be seen in action on Sky Sports 1 on Saturday in the 5.15pm kick-off.
“My aim is to score eight to 10 goals if I play the majority of the games.
“I hope as a team we can get into the play-offs after going so close last season.
“To get into the Premier League would be a dream come true,” he added.
Former team-mate Danny, who use to play alongside Anthony for King’s Cross Lithgow in the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League, will also be hoping to guide his team to glory.
The 25-year-old striker will spearhead Oxford United’s attack as they look to start their campaign with a victory over Burton in League Two.
After agreeing a two-year contract with The Us in June, Danny, who also grew up in Regent’s Park, told the club’s official website, “I have played against Oxford a number of times and know it’s an ambitious club with good players and I am really looking forward to it.”
Completing a hat-trick of successes for the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League is towering striker Duane, who is on the verge of completing a one-year deal with Conference side Torquay.
The 21-year-old, whose full name is Duane Ofori-Acheampong, grew up in Holloway and hit our headlines when he joined Southend after being spotted playing for Pro Touch Soccer Academy.
