ONE of the biggest youth football leagues in London is branching out in 2015 – and is inviting clubs and volunteers from across Camden and Islington to join in and “be part of a growing and lasting legacy”.

Among the exciting projects being hosted by the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League is a coaching programme offering new recruits the chance to gain vital leadership skills that could help shape their future.

The league’s Under-6s and Under-7s development age group is currently run by a team of eight volunteers aged 10 to 18-years-old, who take charge of refereeing, setting up games and running match days.

“We’re always looking for enthusiastic youngsters to join us,” said league co-founder Ash Rahman.

“Developing young people’s leadership skills and helping them achieve their goals is very important to us.

“There are plenty of opportunities available for driven candidates, from refereeing courses and gaining their FA badges, to getting involved in youth work outside of the league where they can hopefully build a career for themselves.”

Another exciting opportunity will give young players in the league the chance to compete on the international scene.

A series of trials are being lined-up at the end of February in order to find a squad of 12 players to represent the league in the Torneo di Calcio Internazionale, which is being held in Italy in May.

League development officer Abul Koyar said: “The offer is open to all children born in 2004 who play in the league.

“We’re putting together an Under-10s and 11s squad, which will get the chance to tackle top professional clubs from across Europe.

“It’ll be a great experience for the young players.

“We’re aiming to put together representative squads across all of the league’s age groups and get them playing fixtures, both home and away, against top professional clubs.”
