TOP basketball coach Hugh Wilkinson is tipping the Camden Secondary Schools League to become one of the best in the capital after bringing another thrilling season in the girls’ competition to a close.
Organised by the Camden School Sports Federation, triumphant teams from Hampstead School in Westbere Road and La Sainte Union in Highgate Road both remained unbeaten on their way to winning the Under-14s and Under-16s titles respectively.
Held at the Talacre Community Sports Centre in Kentish Town, coach Wilkinson, who also manages the Camden Panthers, believes the standard of basketball within the borough is progressing nicely.
“More players are taking part in the game in community clubs outside of school and that’s having an impact on what we’re seeing on the court. The Camden schools league certainly has the potential to be one of the strongest in London. In the girls’ league this time around Hampstead emerged as unsuspecting contenders having struggled in the past, so it’s to their credit and the work they’ve put in over the past year.
“Meanwhile LSU have players who compete at a national level, and with the structure within the school they have the capabilities to be leading the charge again next season.”
