HIGHGATE Harriers sealed promotion into Division Two of the Southern Athletics League on Saturday after securing a landslide victory in their home meet at Parliament Hill Fields.
Knowing that only a win would do, the club amassed 312 points, finishing more than 100 ahead of their closest rivals on the day.
Among the names that caught the eye on the day was 16-year-old Ben Furnham from Islington who won the category ‘B’ shot putt and finished second in the ‘A’ team discus.
Sophie Sheldlrake, 26, won her second ever 3000m with a time of 11.29.2, while Under-17s junior James Millett was first across the line in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ 2000 steeplechase despite competing in the senior ranks.
Highgate can certainly look forward to a bright future with the numbers of their young athletes featuring on the winners’ podium.
Lulu Szego won the ‘A’ javelin, while Ewa Mee won the ‘B’ long jump event and finished second in the ‘A’ high jump competition.
Anthony Norris won the ‘A’ hammer and the ‘A’ shot putt and was second in the ‘B’ Javelin.
One of the biggest turnarounds on the day came in the 1500m where Robel Bahelbi was 50m adrift of the lead with one lap to go but made up the distance to clinch gold.
• HIGHGATE’S Ryan McKinlay justified his absence from their all-important final league meet on Saturday by winning the 3000m steeplechase at the Scottish Championships in a season’s best time of 9:06.1.
