ARSENAL Ladies have one foot in the Champions League semi-finals after beating Italian side ASD Torres 3-1 at Meadow Park yesterday (Wednesday).
Skipper Kelly Smith, Jordan Nobbs and Kim Little all hit the back of the net for the Gunners but Shelley Kerr’s team blotted their copybook when they allowed Sandy Maendly to nick an away goal.
How crucial that second-half strike proves will become apparent next Wednesday when Arsenal travel to Sardinia for the return leg.
Gunners boss Kerr said the team were disappointed to concede but they were more than capable of scoring away from home. “We are delighted with the win and it is something to build on,” she said.
Winger Rachel Yankey, who set up two of Arsenal’s goals and won praise from new Arsenal manager, Kerr, was equally upbeat. “It will be difficult with the away leg, but we always feel we can score goals,” she said. “It’s a little bit disappointing to let one in but it’s not the end of the world, I believe we can score when we go out there.”
