Labour’s test will be to commit wholeheartedly to a people’s vote

Thursday, 30th May 2019

• THE Labour Party position on Brexit has been tested to destruction and found seriously wanting.

In a borough where Labour runs the council and has both parliamentary seats, the Labour vote in the European Parliament election sunk to under a quarter of those voting (22.5 per cent) and over 13 per cent behind the Liberal Democrats.

What might have made sense in the bubble of a compositing meeting at 2018 Labour Party conference has proved to be without credibility on the doorstep.

Of course, Labour has lost a few votes to the Brexit Party but overwhelmingly long-time Labour voters in Camden have switched to parties unequivocally backing a people’s vote on Brexit.

The last three years have stripped away illusions that there can be any progressive Brexit. Any Brexit will damage jobs, wellbeing and the diversity of the borough.

While an early general election would be welcome, it does not provide the effective popular means to over-turn the 2016 referendum result.

The next few months provide a test of Labour leadership in Camden in winning the Labour Party’s wholehearted commitment to a people’s vote and ending the threat of no-deal.
