Labour, effective opposition or debating society?

Jeremy Corbyn

Jeremy Corbyn

• JEREMY Corbyn is to be congratulated for having inspired so many young people to engage in politics, but remember the Labour Party exists to form governments and thereby improve the lot of those who do not share in the wealth of this rich country.

It has to be more than a debating society and its leader more than a chair, important as both these are. The party and its supporters need a leader capable of reacting to things as they are and not how one might wish them to be.

The ability to engage with all sections of the electorate is crucial; this is the only way in which the party can hope to eventually form a government and effect the changes that are – and I predict will continue to be – so desperately needed.

It is hardly helpful that Camden Momentum (including many of the young people who have been enthused by Jeremy Corbyn’s passion and decency) should be spending its time detracting from the abilities of one of the candidates.

This will probably only confirm an impression that the party is more interested in discussing the finer points of politics than trying to form an effective opposition.
