SCORES of budding young footballers from across Camden and Islington laced up their boots, donned their club colours, and talked over last-minute tactics with their managers on Saturday as the action returned to Regent’s Park ahead of what promises to be another scintillating season.

There were more than 200 goals – and one or two crazy celebrations – as the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League played out the first set of competitive fixtures of the new campaign. Totally Goal, Pro Touch Soccer Academy, Primrose Hill and Plot 10 were among the clubs cheering as coaches, players and parents finally got their football fix following the all-too-long summer break.

League co-ordinator Will Cave joked, “After six weeks of boring summer holidays and taking breaks with their parents, youngsters can get back to doing what they enjoy best – playing football with, and against, all their mates. On the opening day of the season the excitement reaches a level usually saved for cup finals day, with teams cheering every single goal that goes in – even if it’s just a consolation.

“Needless to say, with over 200 goals going in on Saturday, there was a real party atmosphere at Regent’s Park.”
