PLAYERS and managers from one of the biggest youth football leagues in north London have gained a new supporter – in the shape of Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
A top team from the Camden and Regent’s Park Youth League were invited to City Hall on Tuesday to join in the celebrations at the 10th Mayoral Community Reception.
The mayor paid tribute to the unsung heroes who continue to give something back to their communities.
League co-ordinator Will Cave, who was joined by players from a host of teams including Aym Higher, West End FC and Pro Touch Soccer Academy, was among those recognised for his ongoing volunteer work.
“From a personal point of view it’s nice to be recognised and told you’re doing a good job,” Will said. “The mayor said he was keen to help us achieve our goal of getting more than 3,000 children involved in the league after the Olympics.
“He gave me his card, and told me to contact him so that he can help with funding and our ongoing projects to get more kids in Camden involved in sport.”
The league, which was run by Camden Council until a newly-formed group of volunteers took over in August, has continued to grow since being launched in 2000.
Having started with barely 50 players turning out for a kick-about, the league now boasts almost 50 clubs and more than 2,200 players.
“For me it has always been about making a positive impact in young people’s and volunteers lives,” Will added.
“I’ve always been passionate about youth and sports development, wanting to see more young people and volunteers make a positive difference in our communities.”
